How I Marketed My Book With Almost No Budget

When my book was ready, I had almost nothing left for marketing. Everything had gone into editing and cover design. I started reading about how to market a book with no budget at all, and here’s what I actually did, and what worked better than I expected.

1. I started with people who already knew me

Before trying to reach strangers, I told everyone in my existing circle, friends, old coworkers, distant family, that the book existed. A surprising number of early sales and reviews came from people who already trusted me, not from ads.

2. I picked one platform instead of spreading thin

I couldn’t manage five social platforms well on no budget, so I focused on just one where my actual readers spent time. Posting consistently in one place beat posting occasionally everywhere.

3. I shared the process, not just the product

Instead of only promoting the book once it launched, I posted about writing struggles, editing decisions, and small wins along the way. People engaged more with the honest process than with polished announcements.

4. I joined communities before asking for anything

I spent time in reader and writer groups genuinely participating, answering questions, commenting on other people’s work, before ever mentioning my own book. When I did share it, people were already familiar with me.

5. I asked for reviews directly, not just hoped for them

Readers rarely leave reviews unless asked. I sent a short, polite message to early readers asking if they’d consider leaving an honest review. Most people are happy to help if you simply ask.

6. I learned that free still takes real effort

Reading advice online made it sound easy, but consistency took more time than I expected. Free marketing replaces money with effort, not with nothing.

What I’d tell another author starting from zero

Most advice on book marketing for self-published authors assumes some budget for ads. If you don’t have one, lean into direct outreach, genuine community participation, and asking for reviews. It’s slower, but it works.

Final thoughts

I didn’t have a marketing budget, but I did have time, and using it consistently made more difference than I expected. If you’re in the same position, start small, stay consistent, and don’t underestimate the people who already know you.
